It's been open for almost 40 years, which is a lifetime in this ever-changing neighborhood.
Victor Santiago, the current owner, started working as a busboy here in 1989.
Victor grew up in a small mountain town in Mexico, moving to Washington in 1986. Last summer, he added a charming cantina to the space next door.
The menu consists of good, hearty, classic Mexican dishes...
... but since the early 90s, it's been all about the buffet.
Available for lunch daily and dinner most nights, it remains a big draw for hungry locals.
You'll find a little bit of everything at this buffet: Enchiladas, burritos, fajitas, seafood, and plenty of sides.
You can build your own tacos and tostadas and sample about a dozen salsas.
It's never easy to decide what to eat at a Mexican restaurant. And here, you don't have to.
The cost of the buffet depends on when you go, but at lunchtime, it's only about $11.
La Cocina is also known for its delicious margaritas, especially now that they've aded a cantina.
