This Virginia Day Trip Takes You To A Covered Bridge And Waterfall And It’s Perfect For A Scenic Drive

Is there anything better than hopping in the car and embarking on an adventure? Here in Virginia, we have so many day trip itineraries to choose from: waterfall road trips, barbecue trails, and just about everything in between. Today’s adventure is a short, sweet, and scenic Virginia day trip that takes us right into the heart of the Alleghany mountains. It’s there we’ll find two points of interest: Falling Spring Falls and Humpback Covered Bridge.

Below you'll find the route for this quick day trip adventure. As you see, you'll stay on Route 250 near the town of Covington. It's approximately a 20-minute drive between the two points of interest.

First up on the list is Falling Spring Falls, which can actually be seen from the road. There's a special parking pull-off and from there it's just a quick walk to the overlook.

This 80-foot waterfall is one of the most highly-photographed spots in Virginia's Highlands, and it's easy to see why!

The perspective in the photo above isn't one you'll get to see since it's not currently legal to hike down to the base of the waterfall. But this photo from the U.S. Geological Survey is a fascinating one!
Even in the middle of winter, the waterfall creates a fascinating contrast to the surrounding forest. Equally stunning are the mountains in the background.

After you've spent some time admiring Falling Spring Falls, it's time to head to the second stop for the day: Humpback Bridge. Constructed in 1857, it's the oldest covered bridge in Virginia.

The 100-foot-long bridge is actually four feet higher in the center, which gives it the distinct "humpback" form.

The bridge spans Dunlap Creek, which is a tributary of the James River. During warm days, it's not unusual for visitors to take a dip in the refreshing creek below!
