If you’re familiar with the trails of Shenandoah National Park, you’ve likely heard of Old Rag Mountain. It’s perhaps the most famous of Virginia’s trails, with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. In fact, it’s consistently rated as one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Virginia. However, this beauty comes at a price. Not only is Old Rag Mountain Loop one of the most difficult treks in the state, but it’s also quite possibly the most dangerous hike in Virginia. Technically challenging, this trail requires both experience and grit.

At 3,284 feet above sea level, the top of Old Rag Mountain offers some of the most exquisite vistas in Virginia.

Spring is one of the most popular times to hike Old Rag Mountain Loop, which can boast as many as 850 flowering plants.

During the winter and late fall, the trail is sometimes closed due to icy conditions. It's always important to check ahead of time for trail closures.
Despite being one of the park's most popular trails, Old Rag Loop is also intense on every level. Clocking in at 9.4 miles, the hike is an all-day adventure.

What makes the hike so dangerous is its length and intensity. Switchbacks and rocky trails make the climb extremely challenging, and long stretches of boulders mean you'll have to watch your footing at every step.
Each year, the park has to rescue hikers who have become exhausted, dehydrated, or injured.
