The Hike To Cole Mountain In Virginia Leads To A Sweeping Alpine Meadow With Panoramic Mountain Views
When it comes to a big pay-off, it doesn’t get much better than mountain hikes in Virginia. Our beloved Blue Ridge Mountains are tailor-made for a memorable adventure, and nowhere is that more apparent than Cole Mountain Trail. Situated along the Appalachian Trail, this six-mile loop is filled with gorgeous scenery. The real icing on the cake is the view from the top. Not only will you enjoy breathtaking mountain views, but you’ll also experience a sweeping alpine meadow at the top. Cue TheSound Of Music theme!
The Cole Mountain (also known as Cold Mountain) trail begins in the George Washington National Forest.
To get to the trailhead, you'll follow Wiggins Spring Road (VA755) and look for the Cole Mountain Parking lot. Visitors should note that the last 1.5 miles of this road are not state-maintained, and conditions may require 4-wheel drive in the winter. Ice can be especially dangerous on this stretch of the road.
The trail is well-marked and easy to follow. Just look for the white blazes of the Appalachian Trail, and before you know it, you'll be treated to these jaw-dropping views!
If you plan on visiting in the summer or fall, keep in mind that timber rattlesnakes are known to live in this area. As always, watch your step and be mindful of your surroundings!
