The bridge also played a role in the Civil War. After crossing it, Confederate Troops attempted to destroy the bridge so that Union troops would be unable to use it. Fortunately, Immediately after the war, there was an effort to rebuild the bridge.

The last train crossed High Bridge in 2004 and ever since, visitors have been invited to walk and bike along the route. Portions of the trail, which extends well beyond the bridge, are even open to horseback riding.
