When you’re driving through Vermont it’s impossible not to get caught up in the scenery. Gorgeous mountains, open fields, and charming villages cause us to gasp with delight. In Tinmouth, as you drive down Route 140, you’ll happen upon a scene that looks as if it’s a page ripped out of your childhood fairy tale book. Table Rock is by far the most enchanting roadside wonder we’ve ever laid eyes on.
In a quiet clearing off the side of the roadway sit four huge chairs grouped around a massive flat-topped boulder. On top of the Table Rock are tree trunk slices mimicking plates and birch cylinders that look like water glasses. Upon first sight, you might think that you stumbled upon an outdoor dining area set up for a group of giants to enjoy a celebratory feast. And perhaps, in a way, that's exactly what you have found.
This roadside wonder was created by Marshall Squier, a longtime resident of Tinmouth. Having stared at the rock for years, the Iraq War gave Squier the inspiration to turn the boulder into something more. He thought that it would be better if the bigwigs were forced to sit down at the same table and work it out rather than go to war.
Pull off the road to get a good look. This larger-than-life creation imitates the tiny fairy houses that are constructed of all natural materials only magnified into gigantic proportions. The Table Rock itself is around five feet tall and 17 feet across. The chairs stand nearly eight feet tall and are four feet wide, dwarfing any human that approaches for a closer look.
While Table Rock is on private land, you can visit to see this curious spot yourself. There is a small pull-off on the side of the road that allows for parking so you can enjoy this creation for much longer than the few seconds that it takes to drive by. Although this display was created by a man, it seems almost otherworldly. If you are a fan of fairy tales, this is one spot you don't want to miss.
