Stretching over 15 miles from St. Johnsbury to West Danville, the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail is full of adventure. Winding through the forests and farmlands of Caledonia County in Vermont, this trail can be experienced by hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, or snowmobiling. Your journey begins at a tunnel and continues on for miles and miles of adventure.
The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail (LVRT) crosses some of northern Vermont's most gorgeous landscapes. It is a work in progress and upon completion will span 93 miles from the Connecticut River to Lake Champlain.
Today 33 miles of the trail are open but our focus is on the 15-mile section that runs from St. Johnsbury to West Danville. Begin your journey in St. Johnsbury and you'll catch a glimpse of the tunnel that is your gateway to adventure.
Pass through the old train tunnel to begin your trip. The crushed stone trail is great for walking, biking, and horseback riding in the warmer months. During the snowy season strap on snowshoes or cross-country skis to explore. Snowmobiles are also permitted on the trail.
At the other end of the rail trail in West Danville, the Hastings Store is just begging for a visit. Grab some ice cream or a snack at this old-fashioned trailside stop.
This 15-mile stretch of the LVRT is a true gem. The entire 93 miles (making this the longest rail trail in New England) is expected to be open by 2026 for the public to enjoy.
