Utah's Wasatch Mountains provide some of the state's most stunning scenery, and for many residents, this pretty paradise is right in our backyards! Mount Timpanogos is truly impressive, towering over Utah Valley at 11,749 feet. You don't have to hike all the way to the summit to enjoy the views; there's a trail that's just 2.5 miles round-trip that takes you to two waterfalls.
To explore the lower and upper Timpanogos falls, you'll take Mount Timpanogos Trail 052. To reach the trailhead, drive 4.9 miles up the Alpine Loop to Aspen Grove.
The U.S. Forest Service notes that this trail is extremely busy on summer weekends. For the most enjoyable experience, take this hike on a weekday.
The first stretch of this trail is daunting, with a steep climb, but it soon levels off a bit. Part of the trail is surprisingly paved!
The grade is steep, but as you climb you'll enjoy beautiful wildflowers blooming all along the trail.
You'll also want to keep an eye out for wildlife. It's common to see moose here, and you might also spot mule deer and mountain goats.
In just one mile, you'll reach Timpanogos Lower Falls.
Stop and admire this first waterfall while you catch your breath from the climb. Depending on the time of year, the lower falls might be thundering or just gently cascading over the rocks.
It's just another quarter mile to Upper Timpanogos Falls, so keep climbing up the switchback - it's worth the extra effort!
Even on a hot, sunny day, the moss and wildflower-covered cliffs create a little oasis on Mount Timp.
Water from the upper falls trickles in many different little paths down the cliffs, which creates the perfect habitat for all kinds of greenery. You'll definitely want to spend some time here cooling off before heading back down the trail.
Mount Timpanogos is one of the Beehive State's most beloved treasures. Do your part to keep this trail pristine - follow the principles of Leave No Trace.
Minimize your impact on the mountain by taking your trash with you, and leaving wildflowers where they grow. Respect the wildlife you encounter, and plan ahead by bringing plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat. Stay on the trail during your hike, and keep in mind that others around you are also enjoying an adventure, so be considerate and keep your group's noise level low.
Have you hiked the Upper Timpanogos Falls trail? We'd love to hear about your trip! If you're interested in taking a hike all the way to the summit of Mount Timpanogos, take a look at this two-day trip you'll never forget.
