Utah has several claims to fame. We are known for having the best snow on earth, Utah is where the first transcontinental railroad was completed, and we are even home to the small town that claims to be the last to receive its mail by mule train. However, we have another claim to fame that many Utahns don’t even know about, and in our opinion, it’s pretty cool. Did you know that Utah was once home to the inventor of the Frisbee? It’s true! He comes from the small town of Richfield in Sevier County.
Walter Frederick Morrison, also known as Fred, was born in 1920 in Richfield, Utah. He lived in this small town until his teenage years when his family moved to Los Angeles, California.
In 1937, at a picnic with his girlfriend (who would become his future wife), Morrison threw a popcorn lid, sending it flying. A game was born and after some time, Morrison discovered that metal pie tins were a much better choice than popcorn lids. The couple would spend time at the beach throwing the tins and one day, an individual offered to buy the new "toy" for five cents. Eventually, the couple started a business and sold the tins on the beach and at nearby parks. They even earned enough money to pay for their wedding.
In 1948, Morrison, along with his business partner, switched from metal tins to plastic flying discs and called it the Pluto Platter. Over the years, the design of the disc, as well as the name, would change into what we know today as the Frisbee.
After a successful career, Morrison moved to Monroe, just outside of Richfield, where he passed away in 2010. The entire area is proud of its connection to this man and that connection is just one of the reasons the town of Richfield and the surrounding area deserves a visit.
Richfield is known as the hub of central Utah and even though it is still quite small, it is one of the largest towns for more than 100 miles.
As you explore this Utah town, take a stroll down historic Main Street. Along this charming road, you will find locally owned shops, restaurants, and other businesses that are worth visiting.
Richfield is also near numerous outdoor recreation opportunities including Mystic Hot Springs and the Paiute ATV Trail. When visiting, make sure to stop by the Fremont Indian State Park and Museum as well.
Richfield and the surrounding area may not be large, but it sure has one interesting claim to fame. It's one small town that is worthy of a visit.

When in Richfield, you need to enjoy a meal at the Little Wonder Café. This restaurant is located right on Main Street and has been serving delicious entrees since 1929.
