The state of Utah encompasses 84,899 square miles — it's the 13th largest state in the nation. But with a population of just over 3 million people, the Beehive State is the 41st most densely populated state. Basically, we have a LOT of vast, untouched wilderness area in this beautiful state. Luckily, we have some scenic byways that take us through some of our most jaw-dropping scenery. Here's the one that's the highest paved road in the state, and it's nothing short of incredible.
The Mirror Lake Scenic Byway winds its way up through the Uinta mountains from Kamas all the way to the Wyoming border. It's 42 miles of awe-inspiring beauty.
Give yourself plenty of time for this drive, because there's plenty to see. Provo River Falls is one of the first stops along the way.
You can see the falls right from the parking lot, or walk down to a viewpoint, or even farther next to the river. It's a nice spot for a picnic lunch.
The road is lined with aspens and pines. Roll your window down to breathe in the fresh, mountain air.
The weather up here can be unpredictable, and you'll find snow as late as July.
During the winter, the road is closed...
...but you can still travel it via snowmobile.
Alpine lakes line the byway. You'll want to stop and see at least a few up close.
The thousands of stunning photos of Mirror Lake prove that it's worthy of its name.
This area is teeming with wildlife, including mule deer, moose, elk, bears, rabbits, squirrels, and more.
Take your time on this road; some of the curves are steep.
Bald Mountain Pass is the highest point on the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway, and the highest point of any paved road in Utah. It sits at an elevation of 10,715 feet.
You'll definitely want to make sure that your phone is fully charged, or bring a camera. These vistas are definitely photogenic.
