Capitol Reef National Park may be the most underrated national park in Utah. This park has so many incredible things to do and see, including my personal favorite — the Fruita orchards. It is much quieter and less busy than other Utah parks and it is packed with history. It is also home to stunning landscapes, including one that is rugged, remote, and looks like it was ripped straight from a painting — Cathedral Valley.

Cathedral Valley isn’t the first area many people visit when they come to Capitol Reef National Park. In fact, this area of the park is quite remote and a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended.

Before venturing to Cathedral Valley, check weather conditions. Rain and snow can leave the road extremely muddy, making it impassable.

There are no services in Cathedral Valley, making you feel completely alone and disconnected. This is a wonderful area if you want to find some peace and quiet, but you’ll certainly want to prepare for time spent here.

Food, water, gas, extra clothing, etc., are all supplies you will want to have as you explore.

Plus, when you are prepared, it is much easier to relax and enjoy the views.

This area of Capitol Reef National Park received its name as the unique sandstone formations reminded early explorers of Gothic cathedrals.

One of the best ways to enjoy this area of the park is on the Cathedral Valley Driving Loop. This isn’t a short drive as it it will take approximately six to eight hours to complete and you will only travel approximately 60 miles. However, you’ll enjoy views you won’t see every day.

There are many hiking trails you can tackle to immerse yourself in the beauty of the area. For example, lace up your boots and tackle the Upper Cathedral Valley Overlook.

This trail is only 0.2 miles and is quite easy. Your reward will be a breathtaking view of Cathedral Valley. Don’t forget a camera on this Utah hike — you’ll regret it.

Another must-visit area of Cathedral Valley is the Bentonite Hills, which are colorful, banded hills that are unique, picturesque, and quite extraordinary.

Cathedral Valley may be out of the way but its unique scenery appears as though it was ripped right from a painting. It is worth the journey.
