Utah is home to dozens of enchanting and charming small towns. However, tucked away near the Colorado and Utah state line is one of the most unique — Green River. This town with approximately 1,000 residents is small, but it certainly isn’t ordinary. It’s one town that makes for a delightful getaway any time of the year. Below are just a few of our favorite things to do in Green River, Utah.
Green River is a beautiful small town that sits right along the majestic Green River. The Book Cliffs sit in the background of this town, creating the most dramatic and stunning scenery.
This small town is within a short driving distance of three national parks — Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef — as well as Goblin Valley State Park and the San Rafael Swell. And while each of these destinations is bucket-list-worthy, there is still plenty inside of the town that makes it worth exploring.
One of these must-visit destinations is Green River State Park, a state park located right along the banks of the river. Here, you will find a nine-hole golf course, picnic areas, campgrounds, and more.
While there is much that sets this small town apart from others, the climate is one of its most unique features. In fact, the climate is one reason that Green River is considered one of the best melon-growing locations in the entire world!
Since 1906, Green River has hosted Melon Days, a festival where thousands of people come to this small town for a weekend to celebrate all-things melon. Held in September each year, this event is packed with activities including a parade, contests, vendors, and more.
Green River is also home to the Crystal Geyser, one of only 15 cold-water geysers in the entire world. However, this geyser is not consistent like many others. It could erupt once every 24 hours or even multiple times in a single hour. You may have to wait some time if you want to experience this geyser in action.
During a visit to Green River, make sure you stop by the John Wesley Powell Museum. This unique museum teaches you all about the exploration of the Green River and some of the men who were brave enough to make the journey.
There is one more thing that makes Green River enchanting and unique — the food! This small town is home to some of the best hole-in-the-wall restaurants in Utah. One restaurant is Ray’s Tavern, where you can purchase some of the best burgers in the state.
While Ray’s Tavern is certainly on the list of restaurants you need to visit in this town, check out our feature article with several additional tasty restaurants in Green River that you need to try.
