Take A Meandering Trail To A Utah Overlook That Looks Like A Painting
Some of the best views in the Beehive State are off of the beaten path and they often require a little effort to reach them. That’s certainly the case with the Salt Lake Valley Overlook. This viewpoint will give you some of the most incredible and breathtaking views of Salt Lake City. However, to reach them, you must tackle the Desolation Trail, a slightly challenging out-and-back hiking trail.
The Desolation Trail is found up Millcreek Canyon, near Salt Lake City. You’ll find the trailhead at the South Box Elder Picnic Area.
This trail is rated moderate as you do have quite a climb ahead of you. In the first 2.5 miles, you will climb nearly 1,300 feet in elevation. There are also some rocky areas of the path so proper hiking gear is strongly recommended.
The Desolation Trail also includes a long series of switchbacks. Enjoy the journey and pay attention to the views around you. The trees and the forest area are beautiful no matter when you explore this area or where you are on the path.
Once you finally reach the Salt Lake Valley Overlook, you are in for a real treat. On clear days, you can see Salt Lake City, the Great Salt Lake, Green Canyon, and even Grandeur Peak.
Desolation Trail is one hiking trail in Utah that is excellent any time of the year. There is a vehicle fee to enter Millcreek Canyon and if hiking this trail in the summer months, watch out for rattlesnakes as they are often seen in the area. With several junctions on this trail, don’t forget a trail map to help you find your way.
