There are some pretty incredible slot canyons in Utah like the stunning Zion Narrows. However, many of these trails require quite a bit of hiking experience and technical gear to get you through the canyons safely and easily. Fortunately, the Wire Pass Trail, located near the Utah Arizona state line, is one easy trail that even families can enjoy. This hiking trail will take you through Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch, one of the most gorgeous slot canyons in Utah.
Buckskin Gulch is one of the most incredible and picturesque slot canyons in Utah. This gulch is more than 12 miles long and 100 to 200-feet deep.
There are many trailheads that will take you to Buckskin Gulch, but one of the best is the Wire Pass Trail. This 3.7-mile round-trip trail has a few challenging areas but overall, it is a family-friendly hiking trail in Utah that is unforgettable. Plus, no technical gear will be required.
You can find the trailhead in the parking lot off of House Rock Valley Road, south of Highway 89 near Kanab.
This out-and-back trail is spectacular. For the first mile, you will walk on a wide trail between cliffs. Make sure you bring adequate hiking shoes because this portion of the trail is quite sandy, making your journey a little difficult.
As you continue to hike, you’ll notice that the wide cliffs gradually move in closer and closer. You will eventually be walking through a narrow opening between the two cliff walls.
There are some obstacles you will encounter on the Wire Pass Trail in Utah, including a ladder you must climb.
If you are claustrophobic, brace yourself. Along this trail, the cliff walls become quite close. In these areas, simply focus on the views as they are truly one-of-a-kind.
Where Wire Pass meets Buckskin Gulch, take a look around. Here, you will see fascinating petroglyphs on the sandstone walls. There's definitely no need to rush through this hiking trail.
No matter if you turn around once you reach Buckskin Gulch or you continue exploring the area, enjoy the mesmerizing scenery. There truly is nothing like it.
As with all slot canyons, this hike should only be done in fair weather. If it has been raining or there is a chance of rain, do not attempt this trail as even the slightest amount of rain can become quite dangerous. Also, be on the lookout for various types of wildlife on the trail including rattlesnakes.
Dogs are permitted on this hiking trail in Utah, but they may need assistance in certain areas such as on the ladder. Permits are also required for day use and can be purchased in advance or at the trailhead.
