After an unseasonably warm winter last year, snowy weather conditions and traditional cool temperatures will return to the contiguous United States. It appears that winter is making a comeback, according to the Farmers’ Almanac predictions, and you better bundle up.
The Winter 2024 Extended Weather Forecast indicates that an El Niño — unusually high-water temperatures off the Pacific Coast of South America — will be brewing in late 2023, lasting well into the winter of 2024.
Cold temperatures are expected to prevail throughout the country, bringing a mix of snow, sleet, and ice as early as December 1.
While winter doesn’t officially begin until Thursday, December 21, 2023, the meteorological winter begins on December 1, with the month forecasted to start on a stormy note.
The Farmers’ Almanac forecast calls for blizzard conditions blowing snow into areas over northern New England, the North Central states, and the northern and central areas of New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
Below-average temperatures and lots of snowstorms, sleet, ice, and rain are forecasted for much of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Midwest as well as central and northern New England, especially in January and February.
The Pacific Northwest is predicted to experience an unusually snowy and wet winter, and should an El Niño appear, it might direct a subtropical jet stream into California — meaning large amounts of rain and snow across the American Southwest.
In the Southeast and Florida, a wetter-than-usual winter is expected with average winter temperatures overall and a few frosts.
If you live along the I-95 corridor from Boston in the north to Washington D.C., you will experience the opposite of last winter’s lack of wintry precipitation, with plenty of rain sleet, and snowstorms to battle.
