This Mountain Lakefront Escape in Wyoming Feels Straight Out of Europe

The surrounding area around Medicine Bow, Wyoming, channels the rustic beauty and spirit of a European mountain village—quiet, scenic, and steeped in nature.

I've never been to the Swiss Alps. I've never been to Austria or Switzerland. And while these places are on my bucket list, I don't need a passport to get a glimpse of what the experience could be. Enter: Medicine Bow, Wyoming. Medicine Bow may be small in size, but it’s big in spirit. Contrary to its surrounding mountains (about an hour reachable by car), Medicine Bow, the actual town, remains much of a dusty prairie town. But it's in the surrounding area, the mountains amid vast skies and wind-swept plains, you’ll find a surprisingly European sense of place, one built on natural beauty, solitude, and a slower, more grounded way of life.

Welcome to Medicine Bow

Though Medicine Bow’s population barely scrapes triple digits, its setting is grand in every sense of the word. The surrounding Medicine Bow Mountains, which can be reached by car, often dusted in snow well into the summer, rise in dramatic fashion, resembling the craggy majesty of the Alps. And just like across the Atlantic, the landscape seems to invite you outdoors: to hike, to breathe the fresh air, and of course, to marvel.

You Can Find Rugged, Varied Terrain at Medicine Bow

There’s a sense of quiet here—an understanding of the land and the weather that echoes the traditions of European mountain villages. Locals in Medicine Bow don’t live fast, and they don’t need to. Their days are shaped by nature, not by clockwork. It’s not uncommon to find a general store that still feels like the town’s living room, or to strike up a conversation with someone whose family has lived in the region for generations. Like the alpine hamlets of Austria, community and hospitality feel less like a transaction and more like that's simply the way it is.

Medicine Bow and Its Mountains Feel Like They Belong in Europe

And while you won’t find ski chalets or fondue restaurants lining the main street, you will find an enduring love for simple pleasures: homestyle meals, honest work, and stories passed down generation to generation. The town’s most iconic building, the Virginian Hotel, stands as a symbol of the American West’s golden age, offering a place to rest your boots and soak in some local lore. But what Medicine Bow lacks in European polish, it makes up for with authenticity. It's not trying to be anything it’s not. And beyond the town itself is the surrounding Medicine Bow National Forest, an expansive area providing plenty of hiking trails, campgrounds, fishing, waterfalls & scenic vistas.

No Matter What It Looks Like, Medicine Bow Isn’t Abroad

So, if you've ever dreamed of a prairie escape without the transatlantic trek, Medicine Bow offers a compelling alternative without the need for a passport. It’s not Europe, but it doesn’t need to be. While you may need to trek to get to the mountains seen above, we recommend spending time in both Medicine Bow the town, and Medicine Bow the mountains, equally beautiful in their own right.
