With its world-famous ski slopes and stunning national parks, Wyoming isn’t just one of the most beautiful states in the country, it's also a phenomenal place to fan and fuel the wanderlust of even the most well-traveled explorer. And the sights are epic year-round! Winter in Wyoming has an undeniable reputation for icy wind chill and spontaneous snow storms, but there's a lot more to love. We've talked about some of the most popular winter activities in Wyoming, but for the outdoorsy type who is seeking a fun day trip or family vacay away from the crowds, Boysen State Park is the perfect place to find adventure.
Formed by the Boysen Dam and nestled on the outskirts of the Wind River Reservation in Boysen State Park, Boysen Reservoir is surprisingly overlooked, despite sitting in the heart of Central Wyoming.
Water sports reign supreme here in the warmer months - there's certainly plenty of room to play! But winter brings out a whole new side of this fantastic state park. Here are just a few of the stunning sights you'll find:
Incredible panoramic views (which are particularly sensational when dusted with snow!).
Icy blue water, which often freezes.
Beachfront cabins, open year-round.
The Boysen Dam itself - and the views from the top!
Plus miles of scenic drives and snowshoe trails.
The Wind River Canyon is stunning this time of year!
For the avid fisherman, ice fishing is an activity the whole family will love - and this reservoir is renowned for it. In fact, you'll even find an ice fishing derby held here every year. This is serious business!
Be sure to check in with Boysen State Park for updates to ensure the ice is thick enough.
But perhaps Boysen Reservoir's most beloved winter activity is its ice skating rink.
This beautiful, nostalgic past-time is even dreamier when the ice is surrounded by the snow-capped mountains.
Skates and hockey sticks are available as well or feel free to bring your own.
While there's a lot to love about Wyoming in winter, Boysen State Park and Reservoir is a fantastic place to experience the season.
Note that day-use fees apply at Boysen State Park.
Whatever winter activity you choose to enjoy, whether sightseeing or something a little chillier, Boysen Reservoir is a dazzling place to spend a winter day or weekend! Keep tabs on conditions, closures, and updates on the park's official Facebook page.
While you're out and about, here are a few other winter day trips to check out as well.
