11 Amazing Places You Can Go On One Tank Of Gas In Wyoming

Wyoming is a BIG state, with lots to see and do. Here’s just one possibility for a road trip you can take with approximately one tank of gas. This adventure takes you from Cheyenne to Evanston - 357 miles. Depending on your vehicle, you might need a tiny bit more than a tank of gas - or you might have a little left over when you get to Evanston!

1. Frontier Days In Cheyenne

If you plan your trip for the end of July, you can enjoy Frontier Days - 10 days of rodeo, music and food. This is one of Wyoming’s biggest events. It includes a carnival midway, Indian Village, Old Frontier Town, art show, USAF Thunderbirds air show and more. You definitely don’t want to miss this amazing festival.

2. The Medicine Bow National Forest

Take the Turtle Rock hike in the Vedauwoo region of the Medicine Bow National Forest, which is an interesting 3.1 mile round-trip hike, and enjoy a picnic. If you have extra time, you can explore more of the Medicine Bow National Forest, which offers tons of hiking, fishing, camping and other recreation.

3. Laramie Mural Project

Take the walking tour, which showcases all of the murals. The project is a collaboration between the Univeristy of Wyoming, the Laramie Main Street Alliance and local business owners. You’ve never seen anything like this - they’ve transformed downtown into a vibrant, colorful work of art!

4. The Historic Elk Mountain Hotel

If you’re breaking this trip up into more than one day, consider staying overnight at the Historic Elk Mountain Hotel. The town of Elk Mountain is small, but charming.

5. Wyoming Frontier Prison in Rawlins

Tour the Wyoming Frontier Prison. Take a guided tour and visit both the prison museum and the Wyoming Peace Officers’ museum. The history at this prison is fascinating. Find it at 500 W. Walnut St, Rawlins.

6. Wyoming Downs

7. Natural History Museum, Rock Springs

Visit a T-Rex at the Natural History Museum Rock Springs. This little museum is located on the Western Wyoming Community College Campus. It’s a small, but very well-curated museum. 2500 College Drive, Rock Springs

8. Fort Bridger State Historic Site

The museum and trading post at the Fort Bridger State Historic Site are interesting, and a lot of fun! The trading post was built by Jim Bridger and Louis Vasquez back in 1843, and it’s part of the Oregon Trail. Wander through the restored buildings.

9. Wild Mustangs

From Rock Springs, take the Pilot Butte Scenic Loop to Green River, where you can see wild mustangs. These wild animals are simply beautiful, and a real icon of the West. You’ll add time and mileage (about 23 miles) onto your trip, but it’s well worth it.

10. Bear River State Park

Bear River State Park is a 300-acre park that offers picnicking, hiking, wildlife viewing, cycling, rollerblading and more. See bison and elk up close and don’t forget your camera - the photo opportunities are plentiful here.

11. Historic Downtown Evanston

Shop, dine and wander through historic downtown Evanston. Relax in Depot Square, which has several historic buildings, park benches, playground and fountain.
