The 3 Most Colorful Places You Can Find in Wyoming

Wyoming is far more than wide-open plains and rugged peaks. From the rainbow hues of Yellowstone’s geothermal wonders to fiery fall foliage in the mountains and the dramatic red cliffs of Flaming Gorge, these are the most colorful places in Wyoming you won’t want to miss.

What comes to mind first when you think of the most colorful places in Wyoming? I’ll take a wild guess and say Grand Prismatic Spring. Of course, we’ve included the mesmerizing geothermal wonder on our list, but it isn’t the only destination in the Cowboy State with vivid scenery. From golden aspens to deep blue waters surrounded by fiery red rocks, these spots are totally postcard-worthy.

1. Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park

You probably saw this coming, but it would feel criminal not to include Grand Prismatic Spring on a list of colorful places to visit in Wyoming. Perhaps the most iconic sight in Yellowstone National Park, this vibrant natural wonder is the largest hot spring in the U.S. (and the third-largest on Earth!). Its signature neon color palette comes from different species of thermophilic (heat-loving) bacteria that surround the blue center, which contains pure water. The spring is 370 feet wide and 120 feet deep, and the water is nearly boiling in the center, cooling as it ripples outward towards the edges. Paved boardwalks allow visitors to safely view the spring, while the Fairy Falls Trail offers an aerial perspective. This goes without saying, but it’s very important to stay on the designated trails and not approach the spring; people have died from losing their balance and falling into the scorching waters. Mid to late summer is the best time to visit, as warmer temperatures keep steam at bay and allow for clear views of the vivid colors. Early evening is generally when crowds are the most sparse. The park entrance fee is $35 per vehicle.

2. Flaming Gorge

Part of Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, Flaming Gorge Reservoir is a man-made lake on the Green River, created in the 1960s after the river was dammed. Today, the reservoir—which straddles the Utah-Wyoming border—is a popular destination for water sports like boating and fishing. The contrast between the fiery red rocks, deep blue water, and lush greenery dotting the canyon walls is mesmerizing. A day pass to enter Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is $5 per vehicle.

3. Oxbow Bend, Grand Teton National Park

While Grand Prismatic Spring and Flaming Gorge are strikingly beautiful year-round, some of the most colorful places in Wyoming are season-specific, like Oxbow Bend in Grand Teton National Park. This scenic overlook between Jackson Lake Junction and Moran Junction is best visited in the fall, when the aspens surrounding the Snake River turn a brilliant shade of gold. The trees and majestic Mount Moran reflect in the water, offering a view that will leave you breathless. Entrance into Grand Teton National Park costs $35 per vehicle.
