The One Wyoming Town That’s So Perfectly Western

When you think of the west, you typically think of high plains, ranches, rodeos, cowboys, Native Americans, pioneers, cattle and horses. All of those concepts represent Wyoming to a tee, especially the town of Cody. Western culture and history are a part of everyday life in this iconic town.

Buffalo Bill

Buffalo Bill founded the town of Cody and was probably the most famous and popular western figure of his time. He had a lot of foresight when it came to irrigation, soil, scenery and hunting opportunities in the region. There are statues and a museum in his memory in Cody that paint a colorful picture of the wild west.

Rodeo

Nothing portrays western culture any more than a rodeo. In fact, Cody is known as the "Rodeo Capital of the World". Cody is host to the Cody Stampede Rodeo which is one of the largest rodeos in the nation.

Old Trail Town Museum

Old Trail Town consists of 25 historic western buildings and artifacts. It's located in Cody just off of the Yellowstone Highway.

Irma Hotel

The Irma Hotel represents almost every aspect of the west; everything from the culture, history, food and social perspectives. Buffalo Bill built the hotel and named it after his daughter. It was the social center of Cody and of the west in general.

The Cody Gunfighters

Nothing screams the west any louder than a good ole western gunfight. You will find one of these almost every evening along the streets of Cody right outside the Irma Hotel.

Stampede Avenue

If you run across a street named Stampede Avenue, then chances are, you are in a legit western town.

Native Americans

Native Americans were key figures in the American West and are still well represented in Cody. You will find teepees at campground sites and lots of shops that sell Native American jewelry. There are reminders of the west at every turn in the town of Cody.

Ride Like A Cowboy

Last but not least, the west wouldn't be complete without cowboys and horses. Cody has plenty of both.
