Wyoming is a state that, for all intents and purposes, has no large towns. Our largest city, Cheyenne, is home to just 63,000 people - in many states, that's a pretty small town itself! Our close-knit communities are part of what makes life in Wyoming so wonderful. Check out a few of our favorite Wyoming small towns that feature downtown districts and Main Streets that are sure to make you smile.

1. South Pass City

South Pass may not be like the other downtown districts on this list, but it's certainly one that you need to visit! This former mining town is now mostly abandoned, but the residents who still live here have turned it into a historic site and a relic of the past.

2. Afton

Thousands of people drive through Afton on their way toward Jackson Hole each year, and not nearly enough people stop to see anything beyond the antler arch! You may be surprised to learn that Rocky Mountain Seafood and Star Valley Chocolates are two of the best places for foodies to visit in the entire state.

3. Thermopolis

Thermopolis is an absolute gem of a town, and probably the most underrated one in Wyoming. You'll find dinosaurs, thermal features, a state park, and a hot spring bath house all in one small town.

4. Cody

Cody, on the other hand, is far from underrated. However, we refuse to say this town is overrated. No matter how much attention this wild west city gets, it's all deserved! Dine at the Irma, see a show at the Theater, and watch a wild west shootout in the street - all in the same place!

5. Sheridan

Sheridan is the perfect little mountain town. All up and down the main streets you'll find artwork, statues, historic markers, and historic shops. Don't miss the museum behind Kings Saddlery - it's one of a kind.

6. Buffalo

Buffalo is one of Wyoming's most haunted towns! It's also tucked near the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains, and it's a bit of a hidden gem foodie town. Dine at the Virginian, the Busy Bee, or Pie Zanos for a great meal.

7. Jackson

Finally, Jackson. While the town itself has a lot of problems that need to be addressed regarding cost of living and lack of affordable housing, it's still the most iconic and charming mountain town in the country. History, gourmet cuisine, and stunning scenery combine to create a valley town that's unlike any other place in the world.
