I Traveled Along A Beautiful Rolling Backroad Into The Heart Of Wisconsin’s Amish Country
I log a lot of miles on some of the best Wisconsin backroads, so I spend a lot of time taking in some incredible scenic views - there’s so much beauty in this state. In Tomah, I recently enjoyed a drive through an area that took my breath away. I followed Tomah’s self-guided Amish driving tour through a timeless stretch of Wisconsin farmland. If you love a scenic drive, I can’t recommend this route in Wisconsin Amish Country enough. Here’s what I found on the drive.
Tomah is a charming city located in Monroe County in the western part of the state.
It’s the gateway to some of the state’s most scenic areas - there’s the Driftless Area on one side of town and cranberry country on the other side. I was in for a very scenic drive.
There’s a significant Amish community just south of town.
The Amish are known for their simple lifestyle. They avoid electricity and modern technology, and here, they carve a living from the beautiful Monroe County farmland.
A scenic driving route takes visitors through this scenic area and offers a glimpse at the Amish lifestyle and some beautiful farmland.
I found the start of the route just off of State Highway 131. I turned onto County Highway A, and then, King Road. Things got very interesting.
The route took me past many Amish farms – you can identify Amish homes because they lack modern machinery and are usually painted white.
Many have windmills. I also passed an Amish school – it must have just gotten out, because there were a lot of kids outside.
I took pictures of the trees and a few horses, but I avoided taking pictures of people – or staring for that matter.
The people I encountered were just going through their daily life – I just waved as I passed.
Use caution on this route – there’s a good chance you may encounter a slower-moving horse drawn wagon, buggy, or pedestrian.
The scenery is beautiful, but keep your eyes on the road! I carefully passed a few buggies when I was on the route.
I hope to enjoy this drive through Wisconsin Amish Country again, and someday, I hope to take my bicycle for a ride into these hills. It would be a gorgeous place for a ride, and the Elroy-Sparta Trail is not far away. If you’re planning on taking any road trips this season, here are some fun finds for your trip.
