Discover a family-friendly day trip in Washington with a hike at Coal Creek Falls Trail followed by afternoon tea at Paisley Parlour.
Washingtonians are always up for a new adventure and the Evergreen State never disappoints. Whether you're in search of a coastal getaway or the perfect burger place, Washington has a lot to offer. Sometimes the best hidden gems aren't far off the beaten path but feel miles away from the daily grind. Such is the case with the Coal Creek Falls Trail in Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park. Slip away for a day trip adventure in Washington that will immerse you in nature and refresh the soul.
Generally considered an easy to moderate hike, the Coal Creek Falls Trail is a 2.7-mile family-friendly loop.
We start our adventure at the Red Town Trail Head off Lakemont Blvd SE, Bellevue.
This well-maintained trail boasts beautiful views of seasonal wildflowers, ferns, alder, and cedar.
A popular spot for hiking, horseback riding, and running, the trail will take you on a 544-foot elevation gain through a canopy of dense forest.
Your furry companion is welcome to accompany you but must be on a leash unless otherwise posted.
Be prepared for changing weather conditions and muddy trails during the rainy season.
Feel the stress melt away under the calming trickle of the creek and the sound of native birds.
Once you descend a short set of stairs, you've almost reached the falls.
The impressive 28-foot waterfall flows best in the winter and early spring.
Although still a beautiful and tranquil hike in the summer, the falls do tend to dry up during the warmer months.
Now that we've worked up an appetite, it's time to refuel.
We can't think of a better way to top off the day than a trip to Paisley Parlour. This tea room and gift shop is tucked in Issaquah's Gilman Village, just a short drive from Coal Creek Falls.
Plan ahead and book a reservation for afternoon tea.
Tea is available any time of day, but if you're in the mood for a real treat, we recommend Paisley Parlour's exquisite afternoon tea service. Afternoon tea is by reservation only and includes a pot of hot tea, assorted tea sandwiches, scones, and fruit.
