The Historic Small Town That Every Washingtonian Should Visit At Least Once

Coupeville on Whidbey Island is a charming historic town with a rich history, art galleries, and scenic views.

Sometimes learning about Washington's past goes beyond reading a book or visiting a museum. We've got plenty of charming historic towns in Washington to visit, from Port Townsend, our Victorian village, to Steilacoom, our oldest town. But if there's one place from the past every Washingtonian should see, it's definitely charming Coupeville on Whidbey Island.

Coupeville in Washington is a historic district within the federal Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve.

It was named after Captain Thomas Coupe, who helped settle Whidbey Island in the 1850s.

Coupeville is located within the rainshadow of the Olympic Mountains, so it doesn't see as much rainfall as most of Western Washington.

The historic waterfront district is full of art galleries, boutiques, cafes, and coffee shops.

This quiet town is a haven for both artists and history buffs.

If you enjoy Penn Cove mussels, you'll be happy to know that Coupeville is located on Penn Cove.

They don't get fresher than this.

When you're there, visiting Fort Casey is a must.

Fort Casey was built in the 1890s to defend the Puget Sound from an enemy attack. It's now an official state park with a lighthouse and sweeping views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

During the blooming season, a stroll through Lavender Wind Farm will completely relax you.

Shop at Bayleaf for locally made sourdough bread, wine, and specialty cheeses.

This place has all the makings of the best picnic of your life.

Whidbey Island is an incredibly beautiful place, and Coupeville is downright charming.

The 1,900 people who live here are lucky indeed.
