This Roadside Restaurant in Virginia Is One of the Best Road Trip Stops You’ve Never Considered
The Apple House in Linden, Virginia, has been drawing loyal patrons for over 60 years. The must-try menu item? Hot apple butter cinnamon donuts.
There’s something special about a restaurant that stays in operation for generations. In addition to being a testament to the quality of the cuisine, such a long-standing business paves the way for countless memories and connections among family members, friends, locals, and visitors alike. While many decades-old establishments exist across the state of Virginia, particularly in historic hot spots like Richmond and Alexandria, it’s rarer to come across a high-quality, time-proven property while traveling from point A to point B. That’s why I can’t encourage you enough to pull off at the Linden exit on I-66.
The Apple House, a Virginia roadside restaurant less than a mile off the highway—one that, even with its recent fresh coat of paint, looks like a glorified hole in the wall—is, without a doubt, one of the best road trip stops in Virginia. Roughly an hour west of D.C. and an hour south of Harper’s Ferry, The Apple House has been beckoning foodies from across the DMV since 1963.
Why This Stop Is Worth the Detour
The Apple House is nothing short of a foodie’s delight, with a menu showcasing downright delectable apple butter cinnamon donuts alongside some of the best smoked pork BBQ this side of the Carolinas. As unassuming as the crisp black-and-white, wood-paneled restaurant looks from the outside, the jam-packed front parking lot (and often double-parked overflow lot) makes it clear to passersby that the eatery is well worth a detour.
As a lifelong Apple House patron—I’ve gone at least once a year for the past 30 years—I cannot speak more highly of this unexpected roadside restaurant. I vividly remember going as a child, with my parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents (who have been frequenting the donut shop since the late ‘70s). At the time, I thought venturing an hour into the middle of nowhere for apple cider donuts was a truly lame way to spend a Saturday, but the perfect bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on sourdough, with a side of griddle home fries, made it worthwhile nonetheless. A staunch critic of fruits and veggies at the time, I refused to eat what I assumed were healthy donuts and instead opted for one of The Apple House’s popular breakfast selections. It wasn’t until I hit double digits that I finally agreed to try a hot apple butter cinnamon donut from The Apple House. And from that day on, I’ve insisted on getting at least half a dozen upon any and every visit.
When I first started going to The Apple House, the establishment served hot apple butter donuts alongside a menu of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items like pancakes, eggs, specialty sandwiches, burgers, barbecue, and sides. Back then, the lines were short, and the donuts were hand-packaged for each paying customer.
Now, three decades into my patronage, I’ve witnessed as the roadside restaurant has shifted its process and expanded its offering to keep up with the hordes of visitors–many of whom make their inaugural visit in the fall, after seeing social media posts about stunning foliage along Virginia’s apple cider donut trail.
What once was a cafe with a small gift shop and catering kitchen is now a sprawling establishment with the original cafe, an enlarged gift shop, and a full sit-down restaurant and bar—The Bushel—with its own separate menu. Rest assured, though: The Apple House’s famous cinnamon apple butter donuts (now, pre-boxed at the beginning of the shift and throughout as needed), pork barbecue, and ready-made Virginia ham sandwiches remain a mainstay of the iconic eatery.
What to See and Do Here
The Apple House isn’t merely one of the best small town restaurants in Virginia, it’s also home to a truly impressive gift shop with shelves stacked with hundreds of hot sauces, Virginia peanuts, preserves, and local wine and beer. While the line is bound to snake through the gift shop, it’s worth mindfully perusing the bottled and jarred goods before heading toward the exit of the (typically quite crowded) shop. Don’t forget to grab a jar of homemade apple butter on the way out!
What First-Time Visitors Should Know
When planning your trip to this unique roadside restaurant in Virginia, keep in mind that a little preparation can go a long way. To experience the shortest lines and fewest crowds, aim to visit on a weekday morning. Also keep in mind that crowds can vary by season; fall and spring are by far the busiest for tourists, especially those headed to Skyline Drive. October is perhaps the single busiest time of year, but don't let that deter you—the mountain views paired with those donuts is a truly unbeatable combination!
Nearby Road Trip Attractions
While you could very well head back to Northern Virginia, D.C., or Maryland after a stop at The Apple House, may I suggest making your detour part of the adventure rather than the final destination? Located minutes from the friendly small town of Winchester and just 15 minutes east of Shenandoah National Park, The Apple House is a perfect pull-off before going about your day. Whether you want to pack snacks for a spectacular hike (Big Schloss Loop and White Oak Canyon are my two favorites, and both are just over an hour away) or grab a tasty morsel to nibble on while you wind through Skyline Drive, The Apple House—one of the smallest, most unexpected places in Virginia—has everything you need for a memorable road trip pitstop.
