State Route 16 In Virginia Will Take You Away From It All

Virginia State Route 16 offers a scenic drive through southwestern Virginia, featuring small towns and beautiful landscapes.

It's often the case that taking the scenic route involves backgrounds and highways less traveled. That's certainly the case with State Route 16 in Virginia, Virginia's lonely - and lovely - route that travels through the southwestern portion of the state. Avoiding busy interstate traffic, this route stretches from the North Carolina border to the West Virginia border by means of some of Virginia's most scenic small towns. As you meander along this road, you'll be met with gorgeous views and even a State Park. Here's more on this scenic drive:

Despite being a primary highway, Virginia State Route 16 is without much of the big city traffic you might find around other parts of the state.

The route begins at the North Carolina border and passes through the Virginia towns of Troutdale, Marion, and Tazewell before hitting the West Virginia border.

The total length of the drive is approximately 80 miles and would take just over two hours to complete nonstop.

As the drive stretches towards Marion, you'll pass right through Hungry Mother State Park.

This gorgeous park is the perfect place to stop for a picnic or hike during this wonderful drive that's off the beaten path in Virginia.

Yet even if you choose to stay in your car, you can still enjoy breathtaking views of the park.

The next point of interest along the Highway is the small town of Tazewell.

This small town has a population of just under 5,000.

Tazewell is famous for its proximity to Burke's Garden, an absolutely stunning valley located in the mountains.

The end of Virginia's portion of Highway 16 is located at the West Virginia Border. It's here you'll find this iconic Virginia historical marker.
