Whatever your reason, Vermont has plenty of places to move if you want a rural lifestyle. All of these small and secluded towns in Vermont listed below have less than 300 residents, but we think you'll find that they are all beautiful, peaceful and just what you're looking for if you're seeking more rural surroundings.

1. Stannard

This small town in Caladonia County has no paved roads and a population of 216 at the last census.

2. West Haven

The one room schoolhouse in West Haven still stands in this tiny town of 278 people. This little place is one of those charming towns in Vermont that have so much character.

3. Averill

The population in Averill at the 2010 census was 24 residents. If you think this is small, the population was just 8 in 2000!

4. Granby

Granby, a town of a mere 88 residents, was one of the last two towns in Vermont to be linked to the electric grid; it finally happened in 1963.

5. Landgrove

Landgrove has less than 100 people, and is located on less than 10 square miles.

6. Lemington

We love the beautiful Colombia Bridge in the rural town of Lemington. Population: 107.

7. Maidstone

The population in maidstone nearly doubled from 105 in 2000 to 208 in 2010. Even after a big jump, it's still pretty small.

8. Searsburg

We wonder what the 109 residents of Searsburg think about the wind turbines installed in their town...

9. Baltimore

The one room schoolhouse pictured above was built in 1894 and used until 1988. Today it serves as the town office for its 250 residents.

10. Belvidere

This town may be small with only 294 residents, but it has one of the coolest shelters on the Long Trail called Tillotson Camp. You can't find many more secluded and relaxing places in Vermont.

11. Granville

Small town, but big views. Moss Glen Falls in Granville, population 298, is a perfect place to sit and reflect.

12. Greensboro Bend

Just over 200 people can call Greensboro Bend home.

13. Victory

This postcard was postmarked from Victory, VT in 1945. The town has a reported 97 people living in Victory at the 2010 census.

14. Guildhall

The sign in the town center says that Guildhall has the unique distinction of being the only town in the world with this name. Small and beautiful, Guildhall is home to 261 people, and is one of many places to visit in Vermont that are wonderful, small, and unique in their own way.
