The Nostalgic Vermont Town Locals Hope Stays Off Tourists’ Radar

Locals love Corinth, a town made famous by Tim Burton, but still hidden away in the Vermont countryside.

You’ll probably recognize Corinth—it's pretty as a picture and also a main filming location in a cult classic film. And yet, this hidden, charming town in Vermont remains oddly tourist-free despite this Hollywood recognition and easy access to gorgeous views.

What Makes This Tiny Town So Special

This small, tight-knit community is quintessential New England, with white-washed wood buildings, rolling hills, and seasonal changes that make the town seem like something out of a postcard. Vermont is already known for its beauty, but the rural nature of this town really makes it stand out, especially since it’s known to have some of the best foliage one can find in the entire northeast.

The area feels wild and untamed, rife with creeks cutting through the valleys and forests full of maple, pine, oak, ash, and birch. But this wild nature makes the town stand out even more due to the contradiction of neat plots of farmland and well-maintained buildings. It was this unique beauty that led to it being featured in the Tim Burton movies "Beetlejuice" and "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."

So yes, it’s likely you’ll recognize Corinth (East Corinth, specifically) even from a glance. And yet, it’s rather fascinating that this town isn’t as popular to visit as one would expect. Perhaps not even ghosts with fancy bio-exorcist titles can get people to drive too far out of their way. But, Vermont locals don’t seem too upset about this, as they can reap the benefits of Corinth without sharing!

Best Things to Do in This Hidden, Charming Town in Vermont

Of course, one of the most popular things to do in Corinth has to do with its connection to Hollywood and Tim Burton. Namely, visiting the specific sites where the movies were filmed. All of the outdoor scenes were filmed in East Corinth, and today you can visit Miss Shannon’s School for Girls, the downtown area, the cemetery, the church, and the covered bridge where the Maitlands crashed their car (although today the bridge is no longer covered). Although the Maitland/Detz house is no longer there—it was built for the first movie, removed, and rebuilt for the second movie, then removed again—you can go on the hill where it stood and look down at the same stunning view of the town that the late, great Catherine O’Hara’s character so loathed while longing for the city.

Besides visiting the filming locations, Corinth offers the best of what Vermont has to offer. As mentioned, fall is absolutely stunning, and hiking through the hills is especially popular. In winter, these trails become snowshoeing paths alongside other winter sports. In late winter and early spring, the famous maple syrup harvest takes place, and then spring flowers really come into play later in the season. Finally, summer brings a plethora of goods at farm stands and U-Pick farms scattered throughout the hills.

Although the town enjoys throwing community events and promoting its local farms and small businesses, Vermont locals also enjoy the region for its photography opportunities. Obviously, the gorgeous natural landscapes are part of that, but wildlife photography opportunities are plentiful here due to the diverse array of animal life, including otters, mink, fish, bears, coyotes, bobcats, deer, and birds.
