Taking you to seven mouthwatering shops from downtown Salt Lake City to Provo, this trail is sure to excite your sweet tooth. What are you waiting for?
While there are dozens of locations we could list on this dessert trail, we narrowed it down to seven that are unique and stand out. If you choose to complete our itinerary in its entirety, you will travel approximately 54 miles and it will require just under 90 minutes of drive time. This means that you can complete this trip in a single day, perfect for when you just can’t control your taste buds. You can use this interactive map to customize your trip and add even more stops if you’d like.
The first stop on our dessert trail is one of the best chocolate stores in Salt Lake City — Hatch Family Chocolates. The candy and chocolates found in this shop are made using recipes and techniques that have been passed down through generations and you’ll immediately notice the difference. And, if you are in the mood, try some homemade ice cream — you won’t regret it.
Tucked away in Sugarhouse is a true hidden gem — Carol’s Pastry Shop. This shop opened in 1948 and still offers baked goods that are unforgettable. While there are all types of pastries to try, don’t leave without an éclair. This pastry shop is known for this sweet treat and serves some of the best eclairs in Utah.
Spilled Milk is not your average ice cream shop. This unique stop on our dessert trail specializes in soft-serve ice cream that is infused with your favorite cereal. The ice cream is homemade, the ingredients are all-natural, and you don’t have to worry about any preservatives, stabilizers, and artificial flavors. This is one stop you don’t want to skip.
Our dessert trail through Utah wouldn’t be complete without pie. Stop into Flake Pie Co., a charming bakery that features personal pies. All pies are made fresh and with high-quality ingredients. Plus, the items on the menu have the most fun and clever names, adding to the excitement of your visit. While you can always try a pie that is sweet, we highly recommend trying one of the savory pies on the menu.
The Scoop! is a drive-thru ice cream shop where you can purchase some of the best ice cream in Utah — ice cream from Utah State University and Brigham Young University, as well as Rowley’s Red Barn. Enjoy your ice cream in a cup, cake cone, sugar cone, or waffle cone, and don’t forget the brownie to go with it!
Blox Dessert Bars specializes in — you guessed it — dessert bars. This incredible dessert shop offers homemade dessert bars with flavors that change weekly. The bars are large, thick, and absolutely delicious. You’ll find items on the menu made from cookie dough, shortbread, brownies, and Rice Krispy cereal. There really is something for everyone here.
The final stop on our road trip is a charming little cheesecake shop located in Provo. Simply Cheesecake is where you will find the most incredible and delectable cheesecakes in Utah. These cheesecakes are baked fresh each day and you can choose a single slice or an entire cheesecake (which we highly recommend!). Whether you like fruit, chocolate, or unique flavors, you will find it here.

The Energy Loop, one of the best scenic drives in Utah, actually consists of two forks. From Fairview, you'll travel along State Highway 31 to the junction of State Highway 264. From there, the byway forks. You can continue along State Highway 264 to Scofield, then on to Colton. Or, head south through the Manti-La Sal National Forest along State Highway 31 until you reach Huntington. To make a complete loop, you could drive from Colton, along State Highway 6 to State Highway 10, past Helper, and down to Huntington.

If you want to take a drive on the Energy Loop in Utah, you will be blown away by the fantastic views, but first, you should make sure you have the proper road trip snacks.
The Huntington and Eccles Canyons National Scenic Byways, or "Energy Loop," takes you through some of Utah's most beautiful and often under-appreciated scenery. It really is a road that should be experienced by everyone in the state and doesn't get nearly the recognition it deserves.
To make a complete loop, you could drive from Colton, along State Highway 6 to State Highway 10, past Helper, and down to Huntington, for a total of 146 miles.
This is one of the best ways to get the most out of this Utah scenic drive. To help you along your journey we made a helpful interactive map so you can customize it however you like and to fit where you want to get on and off the loop.
The little town of Fairview has a population of just over 1,200 people. This can also be the gateway for this scenic byway in Utah.
One quick stop you can make early on in your journey is the Beaver Dam Reservoir/ Benches Pond. Sit by the water, take in the view, or simply walk around for a moment and enjoy some fresh air.

Scofield was the site of one of the worst mining disasters in history. In May of 1900, a spark set off an explosion that killed 199 miners. This photo shows the old headstones of the miners who were killed, along with newer headstones that accompany each grave.
Along the way, you will pass the Ford Creek Waterfall which is viewable from the road. Then, you will enter a stunning canyon known as The Castle Gate. This section will feature towering mesas for which Utah is famous.
The Manti-La Sal National Forest covers 1.2 million acres. You will have plenty of time to drive through sections of this beautiful natural area throughout your trip on the Energy Loop.
