Our country's most incredible destinations have much to offer in terms of things to do and see, natural beauty, and potential for adventure. But sometimes it's the less-obvious things that make a spot extra special. One of these "softer" features is how a place makes you feel while you're visiting. Are the people outwardly friendly, making you feel welcome and like you belong there? This, alone, can make even an otherwise mundane destination seem like a dream come true. When you combine such warmth with other incredible reasons to travel to a place, though, a visit there can be simply heavenly.

Recently, a few lists have emerged surveying visitors about the places where they've felt most welcome. I sprinkled in my own experiences and came up with our list of the five most welcoming destinations in the U.S. Which of these amazing places have you visited yet?

1. Hawaii

alt

Hawaii is often touted as one of the friendliest places to visit in the U.S., and there may be no place in the Aloha State more welcoming to visitors than the Big Island of Hawaii. Most of the Big Island's tourist infrastructure is located on the Kona side, stretching northward from Kailua-Kona town to the Kohala Coast. Along this stretch, you'll find everything from massive, self-contained resort areas, like Waikoloa—which you'd never have to leave if you so choose—to cozy vacation rentals.

I've been fortunate enough to stay at a few different properties along this stretch, and none made me feel more welcome than the historic and beloved Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Because it's a full-service resort, you'll find everything you'd need right on property—including one of the prettiest beaches in the world. But it's also a perfect jumping-off point for exploring this part of the island, including spots like Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area and the charming town of Waimea in the nearby Upcountry.

2. Utah

alt

Utah is not only one of the most beautiful of U.S. states—home to no fewer than five national parks—it's one of the friendliest. Visitors to the Beehive State often mention this, and I couldn't agree more. Though I've never had a bad experience with the folks I've encountered in Utah, something about the people of St. George is just extra special. I unexpectedly had to spend New Year's Eve in the city on my way to Zion National Park, and I couldn't have had a more pleasant experience. Welcoming, indeed! Not to mention, you really can't argue with the town's stunning setting. The Red Mountain Resort is perfectly located for exploring all that the city of St. George has to offer, as well as the gorgeous red rock country of southwestern Utah.

3. St. Augustine, Florida

alt

St. Augustine, Florida, is not only considered one of the friendliest places in the U.S., but visitors to this historic coastal city think it's one of the most welcoming spots in the entire world. As our nation's oldest city, it's a place history buffs adore, but there's also plenty of other things to do here, from shopping to relaxing on some truly amazing beaches or hitting the links on world-class golf courses. Book a stay at Casa Monica Resort and Spa to find out just how welcoming St. Augustine, Florida, can be.

4. Maine

alt

When it comes to states in the Northeast, none is more welcoming than the Pine Tree State. Perhaps it's the rugged coast or maybe the vast expanses of forest, but the folks in Maine are just a bit friendlier than people in certain other states. Beyond the people's friendliness, there are plenty of other things to do and see in Maine, from exploring stunning Acadia National Park to visiting the many charming coastal towns and villages. A stay at Bar Harbor Inn and Spa will put you in good standing for exploring Acadia National Park and coastal Maine while experiencing legendary Downeaster hospitality.

5. Prescott, Arizona

alt

Sedona often makes folks' lists of the friendliest places to visit. But less-crowded, more laid-back Prescott, Arizona, is equally as welcoming and, in my book, equally as scenic with its many lakes and ample hiking opportunities. And if you visit around the holidays, the town is downright magical. Book a stay at the Forest Villas Hotel to take full measure of Prescott's welcoming nature.
