The settlement was strategically located to serve as a defensive outpost against these threats.

It was ceded to the British in 1763, returned to Spanish control in 1783, and finally became part of the United States in 1821, following the Adams-Onís Treaty. Plus, with a population of just over 15,000 residents, the area might feel large, but it certainly has mastered that small-town energy.

So, what is St. Augustine known for exactly? History! Visitors can explore the well-preserved Castillo de San Marcos, wander through the narrow, cobblestone streets of the historic district, and admire the Spanish colonial architecture. The city's numerous museums, including the Lightner Museum and the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, provide fascinating insights into its storied past.

By Air: The nearest major airport is Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), located about 50 miles north of St. Augustine. From the airport, you can rent a car or take a shuttle service to reach St. Augustine. Another option is Orlando International Airport (MCO), roughly 100 miles away, offering a broader range of flights and carriers.

By Car: Driving to St. Augustine is a popular option, especially for those coming from nearby cities or states. The city is accessible via Interstate 95 (I-95), which runs along the eastern seaboard. From I-95, take Exit 318 and follow State Road 16 east into the city.

By Train: Amtrak provides train service to Palatka, about 30 miles west of St. Augustine. From Palatka, you can rent a car or arrange for a shuttle or taxi to complete your journey to St. Augustine.

By Bus: Greyhound offers bus services to St. Augustine, with routes connecting from various cities. The Greyhound station is conveniently located in downtown St. Augustine.

Visitors can also rely on ridesharing and taxis which are readily available in St. Augustine. This can be a convenient way to get around town to nearby attractions without needing to drive or consider parking.

Best Time To Visit St. Augustine

A case could be made that St. Augustine comes alive during any season you visit. Summer is peak tourist season, which brings about warm temperatures and the ability to go to the beach. meanwhile, springtime brings about events like the St. Augustine Celtic Music and Heritage Festival and the St. Augustine Easter Parade.

However, my recommendation for visiting St. Augustine is to do so in the wintertime, as the temperatures usually range between the 40s and 60s, which makes it a pleasant time to visit. In addition, the Nights of Lights annual event transforms the historic city into a dazzling winter wonderland all season long. Running from mid-November to the end of January, this festival is renowned for its stunning holiday light displays, which adorn the city's landmarks, historic buildings, and streets with millions of twinkling lights.

The tradition began in 1994 and has since become one of the most celebrated holiday events in the region. The lights are typically installed on various structures, including the iconic Castillo de San Marcos, historic homes, and along the city's historic district, creating a magical atmosphere that draws visitors from around the world.
