Escape to This Charming Mountain Town in Texas Before Fall Ends
Explore Alpine, Texas, a charming mountain town filled with art, history, and desert beauty, perfect for a fall getaway.
Mountain towns in Texas? Yes, they exist! When most people think of the Lone Star State, mountains don’t immediately come to mind, but West Texas is full of them. When I stumbled upon the small town of Alpine, Texas, on a road trip through the mystical desert landscape several years ago, it was love at first sight. Nestled in the foothills of the Davis Mountains, Alpine sits at an elevation of 4,500 feet, boasting a mild climate, a vibrant cultural scene, and beautiful surroundings. This charming mountain town in Texas is the perfect fall getaway, especially if you want to explore the Big Bend region while the weather is cool.
Alpine’s population is just 6,000, which is already small, but it seems even smaller against the vast mountain landscape. You could easily drive right through town without stopping, but then you’d miss out on one of the most charming communities in all of Texas.
Driving on the winding desert roads that lead into Alpine feels like stepping into a postcard. And when you get into town, you'll think you've traveled back in time. Mom-and-pop shops line the streets and are housed in historic buildings that give Hallmark movie vibes. Everywhere you look, towering mountain peaks soar into the clouds, surrounding the town as if to create a utopia far removed from the rest of the world.
Alpine is the proud home of Sul Ross State University and an arts and culture hub. The town's iconic murals make great photo ops! There are several galleries to visit, and the Museum of the Big Bend, located on the Sul Ross campus, features works from many talented artists. Take a scenic drive, a historic walking tour, or visit Kokernot Field, one of the most unique baseball stadiums in the country.
Of course, no visit to Alpine is complete without taking advantage of the natural beauty all around. The town is often referred to as the "central hub" for the Big Bend region; Big Bend National Park is only about an hour to the south. Other nearby attractions include Big Bend Ranch State Park, Fort Davis National Historic Site, and McDonald Observatory. Fall is prime time for hiking in Southwest Texas, as the weather finally becomes enjoyable, and you may spot some autumn foliage in Big Bend's McKittrick Canyon. That's right — fall colors can be found even in the desert!

If you need somewhere to stay in town, the Holland Hotel is the town's heart and soul. It's been around since 1928, offering weary travelers on the Sunset Limited rail line a place to rest their heads for the night. While the hotel has undergone renovations over the years, it still maintains its unique Southwestern charm that's captivated people for nearly 100 years.
Have you ever visited Alpine this time of year? If so, do you think it’s a good fall getaway in Texas?
