The Scenic Texas Hill Country Route That Leads To 4 Old-Fashioned Bakeries, Furniture Stores, And More

A scenic drive in Texas Hill Country features unique stops like an Amish furniture store, a historic bakery, and a general store.

One of the best Hill Country road trips in Texas is a scenic drive that leads to an Amish furniture store, an old-fashioned general store, a historic bakery, and a roadside stop selling fresh, warm pecans. Not only are the views incredible, but the destinations are also bucket list worthy on one of the best scenic drives in Texas we have taken in a while.

1. Hill Country Amish (Fredericksburg)

You'll find authentic, hand-made Amish furniture for every room in your house at Hill Country Amish - and that's not all. The family-owned business also offers a plethora of Amish and Mennonite food products, from cheese curds to fried pies and everything in between.

The Fredericksburg area is also world-renowned for its eye-popping wildflowers. You'll see different types depending on what time of year it is, but they're always beautiful.

2. Gruene General Store (Gruene)

Step back in time when you visit the iconic Gruene General Store, nestled in the heart of historic downtown Gruene. With a nostalgic candy counter, homemade fudge, a soda fountain, 5-cent coffee, and lots of other old-fashioned items, this bucket list-worthy spot harkens back to yesteryear.

3. Naegelin's Bakery (New Braunfels)

Naegelin's is the oldest continuously operating bakery in Texas, and it's still just as popular as it was in 1868. You'll find the shop in the mid-19th-century German settlement of New Braunfels, and everything - from the traditional apple strudel and Bavarian pretzels to the gingerbread man cookies - is to die for.

4. Potter Country Store (Schulenburg)

Your trip concludes in the most delicious way possible - with fresh, warm pecans from Potter Country Store in Schulenburg. Whether you like 'em raw, roasted, chocolate-covered, or cinnamon-dusted, this humble roadside stop can do it all. They also have fudge, pies, and unique gifts!
