The Incredible Road Trip Through Texas That Leads You To 5 Stunning Lakes

Spending time on the water in the Lone Star State is something I never take for granted. Thanks to mild temperatures across much of the state, we can enjoy a lake or beach day no matter the season, and this is one of my favorite trips to take year-round. With roughly five hours of driving time, this lake road trip in Texas leads to five of our state's most stunning bodies of water - some well-known, others not so much.

1. Lake Livingston

Lake Livingston is just an hour north of Houston, but it's so peaceful that you'd never know it! This hidden gem state park features one of Texas's largest lakes, relaxing nature trails, and a forest campground that feels like a fairytale. The lake is full of white bass, so bring your fishing poles!

2. Sam Rayburn Reservoir

Sam Rayburn Reservoir is my personal favorite on this list. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and just thinking about it evokes memories of carefree summer days. Not only is the lake gorgeous, but it's also functional, providing flood control to the surrounding areas. It's a very large lake, with an area of nearly 180 square miles, so there are lots of opportunities for fishing, swimming, boating, and camping.

3. Toledo Bend Reservoir

Straddling the Texas-Louisiana state line, Toledo Bend is the fifth-largest body of water (by surface area) in the U.S. Offering 1,200 miles of shoreline, the lake is very popular for water recreation and has many facilities for swimming, boating, picnicking, fishing, camping, hunting, and sightseeing. Fishing is arguably the most common activity, with regular tournaments hosted by various clubs.

4. Caddo Lake

When I think about Caddo Lake, the first word that comes to mind is "mysterious." This hauntingly beautiful place is characterized by a grove of flooded cypress trees covered in Spanish moss (it's the largest cypress forest in the nation!). Canoeing is by far the most popular way to explore the lake; you can either bring your own or rent one from the park store. Other activities include casting a line for over 70 species of fish and staying in a historic cabin.

5. Lake O' The Pines

One of the most underrated lakes in the Lone Star State, Lake O' The Pines is a true East Texas treasure. It sits on nearly 17,000 acres and is surrounded by towering pine trees, plus it's stocked with all sorts of fish. Far away from the chaos of city life, this heavenly escape boasts marinas, parks, campgrounds, and boat ramps for every nature lover to get their fix.
