Hollywood Built A Village Then Left It To Decay In Small Town Texas

Abandoned buildings are creepy enough, but entire abandoned villages are a different horror story. Alamo Village in Brackettville, a southwest Texas town in Kinney County, used to be a movie set for old Western films and shows before it was eventually left to decay into ruins. Imagine an entire town with a population of zero, with the only activity being the occasional tumbleweed blown around by the wind. An eerie thought indeed. This abandoned Hollywood village in Texas is straight out of a horror movie.

Alamo Village was the first movie set built in Texas, and it has been the filming location for over 100 movies and TV shows since its inception.

Most noteworthy is John Wayne's "The Alamo", produced in 1960 - the first movie filmed on the set and the reason for the village's initial construction.

The set includes a full-scale replica of the Alamo that required 1.5 million adobe bricks as well as 14 miles of gravel for paving.

That's right - no fake, two-walled buildings here.

In the village, you'll also find a museum...

...several hotels...

...a bank, and other attractions including a blacksmith shop, church, jail, several restaurants, and a trading post.

Alamo Village served primarily as a tourist attraction and a significant source of revenue for Bracketville before closing in 2009.

It was an extremely realistic illusion of an Old Western town with real props and tools from the time period to add to the facade.

At one time, live music and stage shows were performed during the summer months, as well as horse races for Labor Day.

Hopefully, the set will reopen for tourist enjoyment one day, but for now, it sits empty and decaying in the remote west Texas desert.
