What’s Hidden Underground In This Tennessee Town Is Unexpected But Awesome
If you've ever been to the town of Sweetwater, you most likely have heard of the Tennessee phenomenon known as the Lost Sea. As the largest underground lake in the United States, it's a fantastic sight with a wildly interesting history.
The entrance will drop your jaw before anything else does, to be honest. It makes us feel like we're trekking our way into a horror story...
Craighead Caverns is expansive and stunning, a peek at how gorgeous even an unassuming bit of space can be.
Craighead Caverns was actually named after a Native American chief, Chief Craighead.
Saltpeter was the draw back during the Civil War, when the caverns were mined by Confederate soldiers. Saltpeter was used to make gun powder.
It may be the first largest underground lake in the US, but it's the second in the world. It's beat out by Dragon's Breath Cave in Namibia, Africa.
The surface area of the lake that's visible is 4.5 acres, which gives you the viewing pleasure of roughly three and a half football fields.
Have you ever visited? Or maybe one of these places REALLY close to Nashville?
