The state of Tennessee is rich with natural beauty, and to some, it is known as the most beautiful state in the American south. From the mountains to the plains, from the hills of the south to the rivers that streak across the heart of the state, there's a little something for everyone in Tennessee. Still, finding beauty apart from swaths of tourists can prove to be a bit difficult, which is why a trip to Townsend, Tennessee is precisely what you're looking for. Learn all about this darling little town and fall in love with the Volunteer State just a little bit more.
The town of Townsend, Tennesse can be found in the heart of Blount County. It's a tiny town that is home to roughly 450 folks and is known as one of the three "Gateways" to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The land was once occupied by local Native Americans, and the Townsend Visitors Center seeks to honor and tell the stories of Tennessee's first inhabitants.
Folks visit for the stunning colors in the fall and the shock of beauty found in the stretch of a mountain against the sky. You can head to the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center if you're looking for an infusion of history, or pop on over to Smoky Mountain River Rate Tubing for a day on the water.
Townsend is proud to be found on the "Peaceful Side of the Smokies," the quieter area that's less prone to heaps of tourists. Although a petite town, it offers all sorts of quintessential small-town experiences, outdoor opportunities, and locally-owned eateries.
We recommend booking a classic bed and breakfast, or perhaps a locally-owned cabin to really get a taste of the natural beauty in the area. The folks of Townsend are incredibly kind, and you're bound to experience classic southern hospitality in spades.
