It’s Impossible Not To Love The Most Eccentric Town In Tennessee
Tennessee is full of beautiful small towns, but none of them are quite as quirky as the town of Skullbone. Located in West Tennessee about an hour North of Jackson, Skullbone is probably one of the most unique places in the country. Just what makes this place so unique? Here's just a few of the reasons why you need to visit this place for yourself so that you can find out for yourself what makes this eccentric town so easy to love.
Skullbone is an unincorporated town that is really no more than a crossroads with a sign and a general store. The general store, Hamptons, also boasts the title of Skullbone City Hall and houses a small "Mayor's Office" on the second floor.
The sign that we mentioned? This is it. It points to destinations like Bradford (3 miles), Memphis (108 miles), and Jerusalem (6869 miles).
As the mural on the side of the general store will tell you, Skullbone sits squarely in the middle of the "Kingdom of Skullbonia." Interestingly enough, the area hosted large concerts in the early 2000's featuring bands like Charlie Daniels, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and .38 Special before the festivals were shut down due to their "unruly reputation."
The town did have a Post Office for a short stint around the turn of the 20th century, but it's been unincorporated ever since. The town supposedly got its name from the bare-knuckle brawls that used to happen in the area.
If you thought this was enough already, there's more. The telephone pole next to the city sign post is covered in cowboy boots. It's tradition for visitors to bring a pair and nail them to the pole.
