There are some things that every South Dakotan just has to have. These items combined make a survival guide for South Dakota visitors and residents alike. Here are 12 things you must have if you expect to survive in South Dakota.
1. Bug spray.
Lots and lots of bug spray. You're going to need this from at least May until September. And maybe some anti-itch cream just in case.
2. Casserole dish.
Because you'll be making lots and lots of casseroles.
3. Sunscreen.
Since your skin only gets to see the sun a few months out of the year, you're going to need to protect it.
4. A winter coat.
A really heavy-duty winter coat. Preferably wind-proof and lined with down feathers.
5. Adaptability to weather.
Because the weather can change at any moment, you've got to be adaptable and prepared for change.
6. Winter gear.
Part of being prepared for winter means having winter gear on hand. That includes a shovel, ice scraper, a good pair of gloves and an emergency kit for your car.
7. Jumper cables.
You're also going to want to keep a set of jumper cables in your car. You never know if you or someone you meet along the way is going to need them.
8. A reliable vehicle.
To help keep you from having to use those jumper cables too often, you're going to want a reliable car. And it's definitely going to need good heating and AC.
9. Work boots.
In South Dakota, we work hard. A heavy duty pair of work boots is a must.
10. A smile.
With friendly faces everywhere, you won't get very far without a smile on your face.
11. A camera.
To capture all the beautiful scenery our state has to offer, pick up a camera so you can capture some memories.
12. A sense of adventure.
With so much to see and do, you're going to want to get out and see it all.
