The Tiny South Dakota Town in the Middle of Nowhere That Everyone Should Visit At Least Once
South Dakota is full of plenty of itty-bitty towns that still boast successful and accomplished businesses. Yet, it’s hard to deny that the small community of Dimock, South Dakota simply stands out when compared to others its size. With a thriving business that even folks on the other side of the country rave about, Dimock has that extra element that other towns just can’t compete with, making the experience there so worth your trip.
Dimock, South Dakota is located 22 miles south of Mitchell in Hutchinson County. Home to only 125 souls, this community is truly one of a kind.
Located on the western edge of town, Saints Peter and Paul Church was built by German settlers who relocated from Wisconsin in 1882. Gradually, a small town sprung up around the church and begun to flourish with the addition of a railroad. This cathedral that was so prominent to the development of this community tragically burned completely to the ground in 1908 shortly after having undergone renovations after an 1891 fire. Yet this didn’t stop parishioners from rebuilding just a year later. The brick and stone structure that stands today is a testament to the community’s perseverance and faith.
Mass is still held at this historical cathedral that is so close to the hearts of many locals.
While Dimock was once a populous community mostly comprised of German settlers, its population has certainly dwindled, leaving many of the downtown buildings standing empty.
Yet, you can't deny that these buildings encompass plenty of rustic charm.
The same goes for The Dimock Post Office, which is still in operation.
The most incredible and noteworthy aspect of Dimock? It’s home to a wonderful cheese plant in the state, Dimock Dairy, which has been in operation since 1931.

Those who love squeaky Colby cheese will go crazy over Dimock Dairy’s traditional Colby. It pairs perfectly with crackers and a tall glass of wine. (The Pepper Jack cheese also featured in this picture was absolutely delicious too!)
