When the weather turns from cold to warm, our attentions turn toward getting out of doors for some fresh air and recreation. Fortunately, in South Carolina we have a nearly limitless number of options for getting outside to play. But there's one small town that seems to have more outdoor activities than most other small towns in the Palmetto State.

Pickens, population 3,200, is a small charming town in the Upstate that seems to have it all when it comes to playing outdoors. From hiking trails that take you high above it all to waterfalls and gardens — and more, this small town is at the heart of it all for outdoor enthusiasts.

It is located on US 178, just south of the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway. And if it's outdoor time you're seeking, then you'll find plenty to do here. Let's take a look together at some of your options below:

Table Rock State Park

With options for hiking, biking, swimming, fishing and camping, this state park has it all. Take the steady 3.4 mile climb up the Table Rock Trail to get to one of the best viewpoints in Pickens.

Hagood Mill Historic Site

Roam freely around Hagood Mill's various sites, including an 1845 grist mill, a blacksmith shop and cabins. The site also contains access to ancient petroglyphs discovered not long ago.

The Doodle Trail

This historic rails-to-trails hike connects the cities of Pickens and Easley with a 7.5 mile trail that follows the historic Doodle Line. If it's too far to go there and back, then bring a pal and park one car at the other end.

Lake Oolenoy

This peaceful oasis is part of Table Rock State Park. The calm waters always seem to have a brilliant reflection of what ever the sky looks like. Sit, relax, breathe. Repeat.

Soapstone Cemetery

Soapstone Baptist Church in Pickens was the first church in the Upstate for freed slaves. The adjacent slave cemetery was discovered abandoned several years ago and has been cleaned up and opened to the public. Long Shoals Wayside Park

During the summer months this natural waterslide is a hot spot for locals. Pack a lunch, bring the sunscreen and an inner tube and enjoy!

Jumping Off Rock Overlook

Jumping Off Rock, located off Horse Pasture Road, dishes up one of the most breathtaking views in the Upstate. You'll travel in off-road conditions to get here, so bring a vehicle that can handle the rough road.

Pickens County Flea Market

What better way to spend a morning than browsing through a hodge-podge of merchandise? This is the oldest flea market in the county and its open from 4am - 2pm every Wednesday.

Table Rock Tea Company

This mountainside tea plantation is worthy of a visit, if only just to explore and learn how it's done from the experts. Tours are offered regularly, so go join their adventure and check out the teas.

Joe & Maggie Rampey Interpretive Gardens

Located on the grounds of the Pickens County Museum, this unique garden uses interpretive trails to showcase a variety of flora local to the area.

Carrick Creek Trail

Go waterfall chasing on this loop trail at Table Rock State Park. The trail is considered easy and travels along Carrick Creek, in places affording views of water tumbling down the mountainside.
