Often when trying to plan a day out, expenses can a be a big hinderance to our fun. Every state has lots of exciting offerings, but it can be tough finding things to do with the whole family that are affordable, let alone free. As luck would have it, there are lots of free things to do in Rhode Island that can provide hours of wholesome fun. One of those options is a visit to the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park.
This stunning library and park combination was created in 1898 when Harriet Wilcox uttered the infamous phrase, "the people shall have a park."
With those words she donated a massive seven-acre estate to the Westerly Memorial and Library Association. Over a few years, the park grew and became the impressive beauty it is today.
Westerly Library itself is a massive and gorgeous building holding over a quarter of a million items that you can take out with your Rhode Island library card.
There are meeting rooms, study spaces, and a children's room available, and they hold events like readings, book clubs, and even an open mic night for teens.
When the collection needs to be weaned, you can look forward to massive book sales.
Alongside the massive collection, the library also boasts a stunning rotating gallery. Shows change out every month and feature the work of local artists, sometimes even students from the surrounding schools.
Check the calendar for openings and fun events in the gallery.
The library and the park are kind of a package deal, and we can't suggest you go check out a book without a stroll through these stunning grounds.
The park is impressive in all seasons, but the perennials that bloom in spring and the beginning of summer are definitely worth a special visit.
The grounds feature some stunning fountains that are always worthy of some observation.
There is also a huge fish pond to walk around; maybe you'll spot some swimming schools.
And make sure to keep your eye out for Harry, the park's resident (and very rare,) white squirrel.
Doesn't this seem like one of the best free things to do in Rhode Island? With so much to see and do on the grounds, it makes for the ideal day trip either solo or with loved ones. You can even bring a little bit of your adventure home with you if you have a Rhode Island library card. You can learn more about the history of the library and park and fun events coming up at their website and on their Facebook Page.
