Richmond Is the Rhode Island Town Most People Have Never Heard Of

Richmond is quiet, peaceful, and oh-so-scenic, and it's an excellent town for a getaway.

While Rhode Island is the smallest state in the nation, several towns are considered rural and remote despite our population of over 1.1 million. I grew up in the northern part of the state—specifically, Smithfield—and we certainly have some remote areas there (I'm looking at you, Foster and Glocester!). Head south to Washington County, and you'll find the lovely town of Richmond filled with forests and waterways. We can't get enough of this remote town in Rhode Island.

About Richmond, Rhode Island

alt

Richmond is a small, remote town located in Washington County, with a population of approximately 8,000. Within the town's borders are several villages, including Shannock, Alton, Arcadia, Wyoming, and Woodville, among others. Here you'll find a family-friendly community with a rural feel, with forests, rivers, and open spaces. Approximately 60 percent of the town is undeveloped woods and a river. However, the town is also home to golf courses, farms, and historic mills, and it hosts the Washington County Fair, the largest annual fair in the state.

Things to see and do in Richmond, Rhode Island

While Richmond has a rural feel, you may be surprised by what activities and sights you can enjoy here. For starters, the Wood River runs through town, and because of that, fishing is popular along with paddling on a kayak or canoe.

Hiking trails are abundant, and one trail I suggest taking is the Richmond Heritage Trail. Open in 2017, this trail takes hikers on a historical journey through interpretive signs along the way. Another easy one-mile peaceful nature hike will take you to the Carolina Management Area, a 2,325-acre parcel of forest and wetlands. One of Rhode Island's most beautiful waterfalls, Horseshoe Falls, is also found in Richmond. Here you'll also find a fishing pier and trails where you can immerse yourself in nature for a few hours.

If you enjoy golfing, you're in luck—Richmond has several golf courses, including Meadow Brook, a public 18-hole golf course open to all. However, if you prefer a more challenging course, try the Beaver River Golf Club. This golf course is also public with a pro shop and a restaurant (Alaina's Ale House) on site.

Speaking of restaurants, Double Barrel Steak at the Preserve is among the most popular spots in town. With a selection of steak, seafood, and other culinary delights, this is a popular establishment for a date night or special occasion. For more casual fare, take the family for pizza, calzones, and grinders at Town Pizza II.
