Plan A Trip To Little Compton, One Of Rhode Island’s Best Small Towns
Little Compton in Rhode Island is a charming small town with historic sites and beautiful beaches.
A change of scenery is always a good thing, particularly in a year like 2020. We're anticipating another beautiful summer here in Rhode Island, and you certainly don't even have to leave the state to have a great time. We recommend visiting Little Compton when you get a chance -- this tiny town is a total treasure.
Little Compton is located on the South Coast, near the town of Tiverton.
With a population of just 3,500 people, it's a small town by any definition.
Part of the appeal of this town is that it remains largely unchanged, at least physically.
Little Compton originally belonged to the Sakonnet. The first European settlers were Englishmen from Duxbury, Massachusetts who wanted to expand their land holdings. In 1682, the town was incorporated by the Plymouth Colony and renamed Little Compton. And although the town now has many modern amenities, visiting still feels like going back in time.
The town is surrounded by water on two sides, meaning there are some fantastic beaches.
South Shore Beach and the Goosewing Beach Preserve are popular spots in the summer.
The Sakonnet Light, a popular landmark, was built in 1884.
The light was deactivated in 1954 after Hurricane Carol, but it's currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
One of the most popular places to hang out in Little Compton is Carolyn's Sakonnet Vineyard.
This gorgeous vineyard sits nestled between two waterways, and being here feels completely relaxing (especially after a little vino). Right now, visits are available by reservation only.
While you're there, check out the Little Compton Common Historic District, or Little Compton Commons.
That's where you'll find the charming Victorian buildings, a church, and a large colonial cemetery with many graves that date back to the Revolutionary War.
Little Compton is a total gem, and we're lucky to have it.
Spend some time on this beautiful shoreline this summer. You deserve it.
