One of the Nation’s Most Beautiful Beach Towns Is Hiding Right Here In Rhode Island
In many ways Little Rhody already feels like one big beach town. With such a gorgeous coast and so many amazing places to enjoy stunning ocean views, it's hard to choose one best beach town among them all. Recently traveladvisor.com set out to find the greatest beach towns across the country and it comes as no surprise that a Rhode Island town ranked high on the list!
Jamestown is found in Newport County and occupies stunning Conanicut Island. With a population of well under 6,000, this beach town maintains its charm and is quite the quintessential New England place.
Not only historically rich, as the town was incorporated in the 1600s, it is also filled with amazing natural and manmade attractions.
For obvious reasons, Beavertail State Park is among the most popular attraction. The park boasts 7 acres of gorgeous cliffside, fields, hiking trails, and even secluded beaches.
Found inside the park is one of the state's most impressive old lighthouses. The Beavertail Lighthouse operates as a museum with dozens of wonderful artifacts to explore.
The Jamestown Windmill found on North Road is another wonderful site to take in. It dates back to 1787 and is maintained by the Jamestown Historical Society.
Fort Wetherill, an abandoned coastal artillery, is also found on the island and makes for one of a kind exploration. Hiking trails behind the fort lead directly to the ocean and are yet another beautiful place to take in amazing scenic views.
Located in the heart of the town, you'll find amazing seafood restaurants, quaint independent shops, and so much more!
Mackerel Cove Beach is an amazing beach option in the town. It can be found on Beavertail Road and is home to an amazing annual fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day.
With such magical sites like this one at Marsh Meadows Wildlife Preserve, it's no wonder so many great movies have been shot in this picturesque beach town. Two major motion pictures filmed on the island incluce Me, Myself, and Irene, and Moonrise Kingdom, with dozens of other lesser known titles.
