Sapulpa Is a Walkable City in Oklahoma Known for Its Route 66 Vibes

Sapulpa, Oklahoma, is no stranger to Only In Your State. In fact, we have featured this charming small city for its quirky festivals and vibrant food scene. One of my favorite things about Sapulpa is that it’s a friendly community with big-city vibes. Just about 15 miles south of Tulsa, the town of more than 22,000 residents is famous for its location along the iconic Route 66. So, as you explore the area, you’ll come across themed museums, vintage cars, retro signs, and more. 

A popular spot for Route 66 road-trippers, visitors typically carve out time to snap pics of the murals, the world’s largest gas pump, and the classic cars and memorabilia at the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum. Moreover, car enthusiasts flock to the city for its automobile festivals, including the Annual Route 66 Blowout held on the second Saturday in September. 

However, Sapulpa is more than its Mother Road history. It has a rich Indigenous American influence, as it was named after Chief Sapulpa of the Lower Creek Indian tribe from Alabama. In the late 1800s, it was a hub for the railroad and oil industry, but since then, it has become a tourist hotspot and a great place for a weekend trip. 

Why visit this charming small city in Oklahoma? I am glad you asked! The best way to explore any small town or city is by strolling Main Street, and downtown Sapulpa has lots to see and do. As you walk through the business district, which is made up of several streets, you’ll immediately love the historical buildings with storefronts full of small boutiques, antique shops, family-owned restaurants, and cafes. 

History buffs, you’ll be impressed with the museums and historical landmarks in the business district. The entire downtown area and six other landmarks are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Creek County Courthouse and the historic Rock Creek Bridge are points of interest as well.
