The Sooner State is a unique and diversified state that surprises visitors (and residents) with its charm, hospitality and culture. But there's one place in Oklahoma that has been dubbed the odd man out. The website Thrillist.com recently voted on the most "black-sheep oddball place in every state" and Tulsa took the title for Oklahoma. One might think this is a degrading title, however, it actually shows Tulsa's uniqueness and plethora of culture. It's the place people come and say, "I can't believe this is Oklahoma!"
Take a look at the reasons Thrillist thinks Tulsa doesn't fit inside the Oklahoma norm:
1. Tulsa, unlike Oklahoma City, doesn't quite have the cowboy culture one would expect.
2. Tulsa is the smallest city in the country with its own ballet.
3. ...and symphony.
4. ...and opera.
5. It has multiple megachurches.
6. Mixed right in with world-class museums, such as the Philbrook Museum of Art.
7. And Gilcrease Museum.
8. Tulsa is home to the international festival, Oktoberfest, that is ranked as one of the best festivals in the world.
9. As a city, it has diversified from oil to finance and aerospace.
10. It also has a trendy downtown.
11. And beautiful art-deco architecture.
12. And all the while, it's stayed true to its local roots.
Tulsa is definitely a unique place to live! Have you seen our article on the best place to live in America? Check it out here.
