The Remote Small Town in Oklahoma Locals Don’t Want You to Find
Kenton, Oklahoma, a remote town with only 17 residents, serves as the gateway to Black Mesa State Park, offering stunning nighttime skies and a peaceful escape from city life.
We don't know about you, but the idea of heading out of town to the most remote place in Oklahoma sounds pretty inviting right about now. Of course, we can wait. The small town of Kenton is located in the extreme western area of Oklahoma, known as the "Panhandle." It's the gateway to Black Mesa State Park, and with only 17 residents in town, there's not much going on in this remote town. However, don't let that stop you from visiting. There are many things to do in Kenton, Oklahoma. This area has some of the best nighttime skies and is perfect for an escape from the city.
The small town of Kenton, home to 17 residents, is located near the New Mexico/Colorado border at the tip of the Panhandle, nearly six hours from Oklahoma City. It's considered the most isolated town in the state. Known as the staging point for Black Mesa State Park, it is the only town in Oklahoma that observes Mountain Time. A town as small as this, you may be surprised that it has its very own U.S. Postal Office, but it does, and it happens to be located inside a converted trailer home.
Due to its isolated location, we highly suggest you load up on supplies before heading here. You never know what will be open, and you will want to be prepared. The town is so remote it's been nicknamed "No Man's Land," but don't let that scare you from visiting—it's actually quite majestic and peaceful here!
Black Mesa State Park & Nature Preserve is a nearly 1,600-acre park located about 10 miles southeast of Kenton. It is home to gorgeous scenery, huge mesas, lots of hiking, and a peaceful lake for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Birdwatching is another peaceful activity in the park, home to Black Mesa, the highest point in Oklahoma. No camping is allowed inside this Oklahoma state park.
You'll also find a few hotels and bed and breakfasts in the surrounding towns, so if you don't want to camp, there are a few options for overnight accommodations open to the public. Try the Hitching Post Lodging in Kenton, or the Cobblestone Inn & Suites, or the Townsman Motel in Boise City, the closest city to this remote town.
Kenton, Oklahoma, is the perfect place to go for a rugged Wild West experience that will take you far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Just remember to gas up, bring extra supplies, including plenty of food and water, and prepare for a relaxing, isolated retreat.
