North Dakota is full of beautiful scenery in every corner of the state. From wide, grassy prairies, to rolling hills and river valleys, to the carved canyons of the badlands. There is so much to see and love in this state and some amazing places to live in. These 10 towns are in the heart of some perfect examples of the most picturesque areas the Legendary State is known for.
1. Valley City
Valley City is known as the "City of Bridges" for its 11 historical bridges. Each bridge crosses the beautiful Sheyenne River as it snakes through the city and the gorgeous landscapes around it.
2. Walhalla
Walhalla is one of the northern most towns in the state and is just five miles from the Canadian border. It is up against the Pembina River and plenty of pretty sights. It is a popular destination for skiing on the winter slopes and just an all-around wonderful place.
3. Medora
Right in Medora's backyard is the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The steep painted canyons surround the picturesque town and it is breathtaking year-round. There's a good reason it is one of the top tourist destinations in the state - it is simply amazing!
4. New Town
Sitting just next to Lake Sakakawea and over the impressive Four Bears Bridge crossing the lake is New Town. Many people travel here for recreation and to just enjoy the area itself.
5. Killdeer
The view from the Killdeer mountains is a spectacular view of North Dakota's beautiful wide prairies and fields that cover most of the state. The mountains add a scenic element and the history of the area is just as impressive.
6. Pembina
Pembina was the first ever settlement in North Dakota and is right by the Pembina Gorge, one of the most breathtaking forested areas in the state. The town overlooks this masterpiece of nature and the area is packed with history. The Canadian border is just two miles away but North Dakota claims the beautiful spot as its own.
7. Watford City
Even though Watford City is generally associated with the oil boom these days, the city is surrounded by gentle rolling hills of the prairie and is right next to the north unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The scenery around Watford City is certainly pretty as a postcard and deserves some recognition.
8. Fort Ransom
The town of Fort Ransom is in the heart of the Sheyenne River valley. Surrounding it is forests and the river that goes right through town. Just outside is the wide open fields that the whole state is known for. Everything you could want as far as amazing North Dakotan scenery is right here in Fort Ransom.
9. Washburn
Washburn is right next to the Missouri River and has some of the best views of it in central North Dakota. The town's motto is "The Grandest Little City on the Missouri" and it is definitely very fitting!
10. Kenmare
Kenmare is directly next to Des Lacs Lake and just south of the wildlife refuge that is part of the lake. Some beautiful countryside surrounds the town and the lake, resulting in one of the prettiest places in the state.
