The Breathtaking Scenic Drive Through North Carolina That Celebrates The New River

Sometimes life calls for a scenic waterfront drive in North Carolina. And one of the strongest motivators is the relentless summer heat. This scenic 58-mile route takes you to some New River destinations where you're sure to get wet if you like. Each offering has unique ways to celebrate the New River, which ironically is one of the oldest rivers in the world. And speaking of old, a couple of historic stops have been included on one of the prettiest joyrides in North Carolina.

1. Wahoo’s Adventures New River Outpost: Todd

Drag along a sack of granola and start your day at this adventure-driven depot on the South Fork of the New River. The choice is yours between tubing, canoeing, kayaking, and standup paddle boarding. Learn more on the Wahoo’s Adventures New River Outpost website.

2. Dan'l Boone Inn Restaurant: Boone

It's time for a real breakfast served family-style complete with a lazy Susan! Yes, large platters of your favorite early morning foods are shared on the table and refilled upon request.

The hours change with the seasons and summer normally brings breakfast Friday-Sunday beginning at 8:00 a.m. - 11 a.m. when it switches over to lunch.

Some of the inspired experience includes cinnamon biscuits, country ham, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, and buttermilk pancakes.

3. Greenway Trail: Boone

This refreshing, ADA-accessible trail follows and crosses the picturesque South Fork of the New River through open meadows, magical forests, and to a historic ruin.

4. Ashe County Cheese: West Jefferson

Did you know this is North Carolina's oldest and largest cheese manufacturer? Part of the fun is watching the delicious cheese being made in the factory's viewing room. Take home some of your favorites from the retail store.

5. Museum of Ashe County History: Jefferson

This magnificent 1904 Ashe County Courthouse building has become a heritage museum containing historic objects, documents, and images. Read all about it on the Museum of Ashe County History website.

6. New River State Park: Laurel Springs, Jefferson

This incredible park showcases this wild and scenic river, which is why we came. All accesses allow for kayaks and inner tubes for a peaceful paddle or float.

If you want to stay here awhile, the New River State Park offers RV and tent camping sites.

Twenty-six miles of the South Fork New River was declared a National Scenic River in 1976 by the federal government. And in 1977, North Carolina established the New River State Park to help protect the river’s natural resources and retain its beauty. Visit the New River State Park web page for reservation information.

7. River House Inn & Restaurant: Grassy Creek

Here is a very elegant option for dinner - and a room - if there is interest in prolonging your trip. Dinner is served Wednesday-Saturday and Sunday brings a party with live music and hors d'oeuvres followed by the chef's special four-course meal.

The menu changes from day to day and season to season.

We always enjoy the hearty Filet of Beef with bordelaise and fresh veggies. For reservations and menus, visit the River House Inn & Restaurant website.

And the live musicians play out on the porch overlooking the New River keeping the beat as it heads to a mysterious destination of its own.
